In 2009, former international model and personal trainer - PAUL PJ JAMES - set out on a life-changing journey of discovery. In order to understand obesity on a personal level and empathize with his overweight clients, PJ decided to gain 50% of his body weight (40kg / 90lbs). By walking a mile in the shoes of his overweight clients, PJ wanted to experience the emotional, psychological and physical effects of obesity, first hand. His 12 month journey from FIT TO FAT AND BACK shocked the world and brought huge awareness to the obesity epidemic. PJ also inspired countless other trainers to follow in his footsteps and gain weight in order to try and understand the struggles of their overweight clients.     Happy New Year everyone!! Thank you for the continued support and I am happy that my documentary is helping so many people around the world with their own journeys. It was this time 12 years ago, when I embarked on my journey from fit to fat and back again. Gaining 50% of my bodyweight was a huge undertaking but gaining 40kg (90lbs) helped me really understand things on an emotional and psychological level. 2009 was the year that taught me so much and I continue to apply those learnings to this day. I love how tens of thousands of people continue to share their own personal stories and offer advice to others. Many of the comments are truly inspirational and as a health and fitness community, we can always learn from each other. The new year is when people set goals for the year ahead and health is usually on many lists. Goals are very important but so is action. Without action, there will never be results. Aim to improve yourself this year and if fitness and health is a priority, hold yourself accountable and do something every single day towards your goal. Consistency is crucial. It creates a lifestyle. The priority should be to do some form of physical exercise every day, just for 30 minutes, so that you can start to feel great! Food should be viewed as fuel for your body. Eliminate processed foods and sugar as a priority. There are many fad diets out there but they are not sustainable. This year, aim not to be obsessed. Just be focussed. Don't beat yourself up when things go wrong. Rather, acknowledge the mistake and move on in a sensible fashion. You will never outrun your bad eating habits. The only way to accomplish lifelong and sustainable health is to be consistent. We have had a crazy 2020 and for many, it has affected our mental health. Stress can be very detrimental to health but if you're able to do some form of physical activity every day, you will benefit immensely! Similarly, healthy food options promote a healthy mind. This year, focus on improving mental health using movement. Be as active as you can be. If you're stuck at home, make use of your time. Get your exercise done first thing in the morning and start your day off positively. As always, keep it personal. Do it for you! Go about your day and be proud of every advancement. Don't invite undue pressure by announcing your goals to the outside world. Write them down and go about things quietly and methodically. It's a personal journey and you are doing it for you!       Paul I found your documentary so inspiring. I thank you for sharing this, we share one thing we are both the same height. Your documentary has shown me what is really possible. I have started my journey from 109kg to my goal weight of 82kg. I have already lost 10.5 kg and I will follow your advise as above. You have really inspired me. Thanks you.

      mad man.... I do this on a small scale every fucking year... from september to March my intake is higher than my burn and in April I fucking get at it.. right now in lockdown it is 100 Push ups a day + 150 crunches... startet this in 10 sessions now I am down to 5 in just a bit over a week.... and normally by June I am in Summer body... but I did just start with 10-12 kg more than my ideal weight.

    I really really wish that more people could experience this, or at least just watch this, they think it's easy and lazy to be fat, but they can't possibly empathize because they've never been heavy. Even as someone with weight issues this was eye opening. Edit: ok so I'm at the end now, in my opinion he completely failed. He didn't gain any insight into himself or the people he tries to train. He was only worried about aesthetics and getting back into model shape. I'm quite disappointed honestly. I think getting fat just turned him into a negative ass whiner, then getting thin again just blew up his ego exponentially.

    I was 79 kg ripped and over the last two years i went up to 105kg of pure fat.. I am on my journey the last month and now i am at 91kg. Goal is to get back to 80 to 83kg.. seen this doco and has helped me out.. thanks

    Is it weird that I’m getting grossed out/sick watching him eat these unhealthy foods? Really makes you take a step back & really think about what you put in your body & how it makes you feel over time... Definitely have to remember those mental images to continue my own weight loss journey. I’m an emotional eater so that dopamine rush kicks in from time to time.     Much damage has been done by those "no pain, no gain" posers who discourage people from even starting fitness because of that association. I hung around those types and most of them weren't saying that Five years later because they screwed themselves up.

    It is difficult to start as an overweight person, because basicly all your life lessons have been around food, and it is extremely difficult to change your thinking that you grew up with and were programmed to. I was a fat kid and at my teenagers desided to loose alot of weight, and I did. I have been more or less healthy weight since, for the past 20 years, and I still feel like I am on constant restraint, else my eating springs out of control. Not because I am not learned or aware of a healthy diet or how eating affects my body and how to keep myself sated, but because I still after 20 years haven't un-learned patters that I grew up with. I thought that when I get fit, and maintain healthy eating for a long time, I would get used to it and it would become easier, but no. Now I have had to accept, that I will have to keep fighting for the rest of my life, just to maintain my goals, because my mind still wants to return to my childhood eating patterns.

    I have a serious problem with health I was fit and healthy but I caught an illness that changed my life I kept getting outbreaks everytime I worked out, which caused depression at the my fathers started to take me out to eat unhealthy food and big portions I was 20 but didn't understand as I was used to eating what I wanted and being fit, but I never ate big and in moderation, after living with the disease I became depressed then started smoking cannabis and stopped excersising and lived of fast food I lived like this for 10 years and nearly died, my muscles have wasted away, but I am clean now and learning to eat healthy and control my disease. I will be fit again. Prior to my illness I was really fit and ran 20- 30 miles a week and played multiple sports.

    It's crazy how strongly some of your behaviour mirrored that of an addict. I remember seeing this documentary some years back (likely before I'd started my training) but revisiting this now I really believe this needs to see more publicity, especially given just how much misinformation is going around regarding weight loss and obesity due to the for lack of a better term, radicalisation of the fat acceptance movement. Love the documentary and I hope the personal training and modelling is going well for you my man.

    Really inspiring and a great idea,I love how the psychological side of it really comes out. This is a lesson of empathy of others' problems, putting yourself in their shoes, just as much as weight loss. I wish there was more documented on your approach to losing the weight anf how you overcame the binge eating and regained control. But I understand this was more motivational than educational. Very impressive and I await Netflix to completely rip off the idea one day!

    My issue is getting the nutrition right. I fell into the trap of not eating as many calories as I should. In your head u think less goes in, more exercise = more weight loss. After a few weeks the weight loss just drops and u just give up because you tell yourself your putting in the work but not getting any results.

    There are people that do not like to follow rules somebody else made for them. Consciously they agree with the trainer/dietician that they are committed to the target of losing weight and/or becoming fitter. Subconsciously they sabotage it. "You are not going to tell me what I should do" is what their brain subconsciously thinks. Michel said at the beginning of the regime to PJ: I know what I am doing. I know how to get there. "I am in control here, not you" kind of attitude. There is a great story of psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson who had an obese client that had tried every possible diet and was still obese. Just like Michele. Erickson told her that he would take her as a client under one condition: she should blindly follow and never question his instructions. After she agreed, he asked her to put on 2 kilos in 2 weeks. She did. Then he asked her to put on another 2 kilos. This continued until she got broken, she begged him not to ask her to put on kilos again. That's when he gave her a diet and she started losing weight.

    Dont get me wrong this is absolutely brilliant. But for some one that has been over weight their entire life. compard to some one that has gained a lot of weight for a short while. it Is a different mind set Going in to some thing like this. Personally the heaviest i have ever been was 345lbs i am 5'6 currently i am around 250lbs. But i have lost that motivation to keep going. nothing for me has changed. i wish that losing weight would be able to change the fact im depressed.

    I went whole food-plant based Starch Solution to lower my total serum cholesterol, which continued to go up even after I quit all added sugar items and fruit with sugar. 200 is the cutoff and mine was 215 mg/dl. It dropped to 125 mg/dl, which is ideal. Risk of heart problems is extremely low to non-existent at that level. Weight dropped 50 lb, and came off blood pressure medication with doctor supervision. Blood pressure is normal as is resting heart rate, which was also controlled by that medication I came off. Now heart rate is normal at around 73 beats per minute, where before I started the medication it was over 100. But the biggest thing is, I don't have insatiable craving like I did before, and I feel fully satisfied, and very happy after meals. Completely. Just find the meals you like. There's huge diversity in the plan. It takes time to switch over and discipline, but watch the videos a lot. You find the tips and tricks. That is if you want to give it a shot.

    "What's better; fruit juice or coke?" They're more or less equivalent. One is sugar water with artificial flavors and colors, one is sugar water with vitamins. The vitamin content in juice does not offset the huge amount of sugar present.

    Intersting. I have maintained weight loss within very healthy % for over 1.5 years. I diagree u need to work out 1 hour a day. Have failed at tgat, 80% nutrition 3-4 workouts per week. Cut booze. Only drink socially with old friends booze neat or with sparking water or ice cube. Set 5 year goals not bullshit ones for beach trip or wedding reunion etc.

    I saw a few comments mentioning how you are still replying to comments and i just wanna say first of all, congrats man. I know its been like 12 years but this video is giving me the push to start my own weightloss journey. Secondly, i wanna know what happened with michele, the way she was trying to blame you, or this or that saying that you demotivated her when in reality if it was me in her place i would be motivated, like shit this dude went from that to this in a matter of 3 months? I can do it too. But it somehow failed to motivate her and i don't understand how. I especially found it disrespectful of her to say that you don't understand what its like to be in her shoes when you literally were in her shoes. Also what do you think of the modern fat acceptance movement? As someone who has been in that place and back? Also got any tips or programs that aren't too costly that i can try out? ps: Any person that says that they are happy being overweight is lying. Its not impossible to be happy with that body, but there are always times where you're gonna look down and go "fuck, i wish i had that fit body i had years ago". I know because i lied to myself this very thing for a long time, until some time ago when i was in the shower and i saw myself in the mirror and it was like a train hitting me out of nowhere. And i just knew that right now i have atleast some capability and energy to make this work, soon i won't. So i need to make it work now.

    I am in same position, I was close to competing for the Nabas back in 2003, and I was super fit with the ideal body was like the front cover of mens health....kept fairly good for 14 years....back 7 years ago I let go big time and now I want to get back the old me..I am 48 and this is my 1st month back at gym and shit its hard and so far slow...but I will keep going and get it right The good thing is I know the diet and the gym routines, the down side is time to recover now as age is against me...

      The first few weeks will be tough but I promise you, getting back to something you've previously been is ALWAYS Far faster than it first took to achieve it. Your recovery time will only continue to get better and better as you keep training, just make sure you're eating well, eating the right amount for your goals and getting enough sleep. Due to covid I've been out the gym for about 6 months, I'm on week 5 of training and I'm already back up to my old weight. Keep it up man, if you keep working the odds are in your favour.

    Come on man 👏🏻👏🏻 the level of confidence this video gave, same situation here from 75KG fit, i went to 98KG (except it was not an experiment) and now working out and 90kg atm, making progress back bit by bit; getting back to shape and improving my mental health.

    Michelle is those people who blame the world for her actions 🙄.Anyone who is fat and tells you they are happy being fat are lying. If they had a choice take the blue pill = in shape and looking fit or red pill = stay the same, they wud swallow up that blue pill in a heartbeat.but they wud never tell you that.
